Alpine Retro Oversized Shield Frame in Plant Based Acetate

The Aspen is a single-lens shield silhouette from Monokel Eyewear. A continuous visor-style lens runs across the frame, with a straight top line and soft curve through the eye line, giving it a slightly architectural feel.

The frame is handmade from plant-based acetate, finished with Carl Zeiss CR-39 lenses. The lens sits wide and close, offering a broad field of vision with reduced side glare. The tint leans warm—more contrast than neutral—so it holds up in mixed light rather than just full sun.

The overall build is oversized but controlled: light enough for extended wear, with shaped temples and a subtle bend behind the ear to keep it stable without pressure. Stainless steel hinges with coated screws keep the movement smooth and durable.

The making of the Havana acetate is truly an artisanal process. First, small coloured pellets of various hues of yellow, brown and orange by mixing organic color powder with raw biodegradable cellulose acetate. The result is a highly durable, hypoallergenic material, made from renewable resources. The coloured acetate pellets are then mixed and stirred by hand to achieve the speckled Havana pattern, thus making the pattern on every frame unique - no two pairs alike.

The red hue in brown lenses improve depth perception and enhances contrast. This lens is a category 1, meaning it is not ideal in very sunny conditions, but great in overcast or even to give your eyes a bit of extra support indoors. All lenses feature anti-scratch and anti-reflective treatment with 100% UVA/UVB protection. Made by renowned German lens- and optics manufacturer Carl Zeiss.

MONOKEL Lenses

All of Monokel's sunglasses lenses have been designed and produced by the world renowned Zeiss Corporation. The Zeiss Foundation has been around for 150 years and is a world leader in lens manufacturing for all kinds of applications including camera lenses, microscopes and opthalmic lenses. Needless to say, the lenses in Monokel Eyewear are outstanding quality and are 100% UV protective and in compliance with European, USA, Australian, and New Zealand standards.

Handmade Detail

Monokel's sunglasses are a premium hand crafted product. The coloured lenses are made by mixing organic color powder or black ink with raw biodegradable cellulose acetate extracted from wood and cotton pulp. The acetate pieces are then rolled in wood pellets, oil and paste for a smooth finish which is fianlly hand-buffed by Monokel's technicians. The screws and hinges are Japanese teflon coated steel for exceptional durability.
