Kushime (櫛目) is a Japanese term that literally means “comb marks” or “comb pattern.” In traditional Japanese pottery and ceramics, kushime refers to decorative grooves or textured lines made by dragging a comb-like tool across the surface of clay before firing. The technique creates rhythmic patterns that add visual interest and emphasize the handmade character of a piece. Kushime decoration can be simple or intricate, appearing on bowls, plates, vases, and tea ware. Beyond aesthetics, the texture may improve grip and tactile appeal. The technique has been used for centuries and remains popular in both traditional and contemporary Japanese ceramics.
Mino ware is one of Japan’s most established ceramic traditions, produced primarily in Gifu Prefecture for more than 1,300 years. Widely used across Japanese homes and restaurants, Mino ware is known for its balance of practicality, craftsmanship and understated design. The style covers a broad range of ceramics, from rustic tea ceremony bowls to contemporary tableware, often featuring distinctive glazes such as Oribe, Shino and Seto Black.
Shaped by regional clay and generations of kiln expertise, Mino ware reflects the everyday rituals of Japanese dining while maintaining a strong connection to traditional pottery techniques. Its natural textures, organic forms and durable finishes have helped make it one of Japan’s most widely produced and recognised ceramic styles.
Oda Pottery was established in 1921 in Mizunami, Gifu Prefecture, one of the main production areas of Mino ware (Minoyaki).
Located in eastern Gifu alongside the cities of Tajimi and Toki, Mizunami is part of a region known as Japan’s pottery capital. Renowned for its rich variety of materials, designs, and techniques, the area has played a vital role in Japanese ceramic culture for centuries.
Since the beginning of the Meiji era, Mizunami has been a leading producer of white porcelain, exporting Western-style tableware around the world. Building on the craftsmanship and dedication passed down through generations
