Modern Mino Pottery Green Tea Bowl from Japan

The Chips Inc. Heuge Matcha Bowl in black is part of a range of Mino pottery using the four colours that have transcended 1000 years of pottery making in Japan. It has a 500ml capacity and nice wide opening to get a good amount of air into the whisk of your matcha prep.

The finish on this bowl is Setoguru, or glossy black and is one of the four traditional colours that also includes Shino, with its melt-in-your-mouth natural white colour, Oribe with its austere deep green hue, and Kizeto with its warm yellow tinge. These warm natural colours are considered the best colours to complement Japanese food and drink.

Chips Inc. created this work together with artisans from the Mino Province using Mino materials and techniques. Mino Pottery is spectacular and is celebrated and respected all over Japan (as well as the rest of the world.)

Mino ware (Mino yaki in Japanese) is a type of pottery crafted primarily in eastern Gifu Prefecture, particularly in the towns of Tajimi, Toki, Mizunami, and Kani. Notably, Mino ceramics make up 50% of Japan's total ceramic production.

This pottery tradition boasts a rich history stretching back over 1,300 years. Its origins are believed to trace back to the late Kofun period (7th century) in Gifu Prefecture's Tono region. Back then, potters used ancient anagama kilns built into mountainsides to fire their hard Sueki earthenware.
