L:A BRUKET | The Power of Nature
Varberg, home to natural skincare brand L:A Bruket, is a lovely coastal town in Halland, Sweden, about 75 kilometres from Gothenburg. The town is popular in the summer, with lots of beautiful beaches to enjoy. However, the locals swim all year round, not just in the warmer months. There’s a real passion there for sea-swimming, with separate nudist beaches for men and women. These are sheltered and have walls to give swimmers a bit of privacy, which is good for those who are bashful about stripping off!
The wonderful Kallbadhuset (cold bath house) in Varberg makes taking the plunge a lot more convenient than just gradually getting a little deeper, inch by chilly inch, until you get hit by a big wave on your way into the sea. The beautiful building at the end of a pier has steps down into the ocean, and also houses a sauna and changing rooms.
Enjoying the Cold Baths at Varberg, Sweden
The tradition of cold and hot baths in Varberg dates to the 1820s when a floating pool for cold sea baths was built in the harbour. In 1864 it was decided that the city needed a better new hot bath house and cold bath house. However, these bath houses, and the next, were destroyed by storms. Even the gorgeous, Moorish Kalbadhuset, which was built in 1903 and lovingly restored in the 1990s, has had its share of storm damage. The elements are a powerful force on the Swedish coast!
Varberg has a long tradition of bathing houses
Indeed, to quote L:a Bruket founders Mats Johansson and Monica Kylén; “In Sweden, nature isn’t something you visit. It comes to you whenever you step outside. Sun, wind, rock and ice; salt, sand, mud and water. Elements in a tangle of continuous change. The harsh coastal conditions can weather our skin and hair, but rather than hiding from nature, we turn to it for inspiration and answers.”
This has led them to concoct some wonderful sea salt body exfoliants, such as 215 Grapefruit Leaf Sea Salt Scrub, a natural sea salt scrub that deeply exfoliates and nourishes the skin with an energising and relaxing fresh citrus scent. (see below)
Spa Culture and Birth of L:A BRUKET
Spa culture in Varberg has evolved since the 1800s, with spa hotels such as the Varbergs Stadshotell, built in 1902, which now houses the luxurious rooftop Asia Spa with views over the harbour, Varberg Fortress, and the sea. Here you can enjoy the Vitality Pools, Japanese Springs and the Sauna Oasis, with several different types of sauna. You can also indulge in all manner of spa treatments and massages. I’m putting this forward as an option for the next USTUDIO work outing. Well, I can dream…
From these two formative elements, spa culture and the power of the natural environment, the L:A Bruket brand grew. Natural and organic skincare with a simple philosophy: innovation driven by nature and 200 years of spa culture. For a good example, try indulging yourself with 001 Marigold / Orange / Geranium Sea Salt Bath, a sea salt bath to bring balance to body, skin and emotions.
Backed by this well-established natural skincare knowledge, they have been developing organic formulas that protect and nurture the skin and hair since 2008. They apply a modern mindset to age-old sea therapy practices, such as seaweed bathing, to create innovative contemporary treatments that use sustainably sourced ingredients.
After all, it’s not always possible to visit a Swedish Spa, much as we’d like to. L:A Bruket’s luxurious natural products give us the opportunity to try spa culture for ourselves, in the comfort of our own homes, even if the weather outside is nothing but plain grey old drizzle (looking at you, Bristol!) But you can give your eyes a little spa-style lift with 168 Cottonseed Eyebalm, a calming and natural eye balm that nourishes and moisturises the delicate skin around the eye.
Innovation Driven By Nature
They never compromise when it comes to ingredient purity, because they know that our skin and hair respond to natural molecules most effectively. Embracing the years of spa culture in their home town, L:A Bruket always look for the purest natural ingredients. The resulting products are defined by function and quality – made to be resilient in an unforgiving climate so that they can meet the demands of any situation, even the power of a storm on the Swedish coast! Try 102 Bergamot / Patchouli Hand Cream, a deeply nourishing and rejuvenating hand cream with a relaxing woody and citrusy scent.
L:A Bruket products gradually train your skin and hair to perform better in the long-term. Rather than a quick temporary fix, these are formulas designed to fit into a daily self-care routine and form part of a healthy lifestyle for years to come. Their hugely popular 112 Lemongrass Conditioner is great for normal to oily hair, detangling to leave hair silky smooth with a subtle scent of lemongrass, rosemary and sage.
And because a holistic approach to a wholesome lifestyle is truly what L:a Bruket stand for, they have created a home range of products to bring the scents of nature to your indoors. Created with the same philosophy of offering high quality products with the best possible ingredients, their home range brings nourishment and comfort to your homes, in a safe and sustainable way. Their Home Collection includes full and travel-sized candles, reed diffusers, and nifty fragrance tags which will scent your wardrobe or a whole room.
Natural, Organic and Truly Luxurious
We love L:A Bruket here at USTUDIO, they really do take on the very best of their home town by harnessing both the power of nature and of Swedish spa culture in their products and creating such a glorious brand with beautifully scented, natural, organic and luxurious products. See below for our staff picks!
Anna chooses the 149 Black Oak Travel Candle; (link) “Small enough to pop in your suitcase, this little candle can make any old air b and b into a wonderful Swedish luxury hotel, with its indulgent scent of blackened oak, nordic woods, cashmere wood and birch. For a small candle, it really packs a punch, will fill the room with scent and burns for up to 15 hours”

TC chooses the 219 Beard Oil (below) “I love this beard oil for its scent and texture. It’s great to use on a beard for conditioning and for moisturising skin, and when I decide to shave it all off it can be used as a shaving oil.”
Jakey picks the 086 Coriander/Black Pepper shampoo (below) “I have tons of hair and it can get a bit dry and tangly but this amazing natural shampoo really helps keep it soft and happy. And it smells lovely too!”
